St. Moritz, Winter Olympics 1928. Riders without a horse pull skiers across the race track at maximum speed: Skijöring is becoming a cult and will soon embrace motorsports. Ten years later, the first motorized Renntandems cross the ice in Zell am See. Soon after, the first ice races for motorcycles of all classes and automobiles take place. Ice and cold, hot engines and the smell of gasoline, rubber and spikes, extreme driving distances and sporting precision– the races on the frozen runway have lost none of their fascination.
During 40 years the spectacular and historical ice race with race cars and Skijlring excited 10.000 motorsport enthusiasts. But uncertain weather conditions led to the end of the legendary ice race in 1974 and it sank into a long sleep. Ferdinand Porsche and Vinzenz Greger bring the public success back to life. In a newly interpretation with the name GP ICE RACE well-known elements return during an entire motorsport weekend. On the traditional racetrack at the old airport amateur drivers as well as professional driver teams and manufacturers will compete in different racing categories.
