9tro: When did your passion (and career) in dancing start and what propelled you to ‘step up’?

Ophelia: It started when I was still in school, but I did not pursue it immediately because of stage fright. It wasn’t for another two years till I finally mustered up enough courage to go for my polytechnic’s dance club audition. Unfortunately, I had no prior experience and was not good enough to join the school’s dance club as they were one of the top clubs in Singapore. That didn’t stop me, in fact, it served as a motivation and I started taking up dance classes to improve myself which eventually resulted in me forming up my own crew.

9tro: What were some of your most unforgettable memories (dance)?

Ophelia: When I performed for Shilla’s Duty Free concert about 3 years ago. It was the biggest and most memorable stage I have ever stood on. Our crew did the opening for two k-pop groups, Red Velvet and Shinee, to a tune of over 3000 people. I can still feel it like it was yesterday, the moment right before the song started playing when I was standing on the lightless stage, and right in front of me were thousands of light sticks that resembled a sky full of stars. Though the screams weren’t for us, I was touched that I’ve come this far.

9tro: How many years have you been modeling?

Ophelia: I got my first commercial when I was 21 and started participating in events, runways and various other acting gigs along the way.

9tro: What were some of your most memorable modeling gigs?

Ophelia: It was a commercial for an insurance company. I had to gulp down a “healthy” juice which consisted of blended wasabi, spinach, lettuce and kiwi. The production crew basically blended foods that were green. *giggle* We had 32 NGs because the drink tasted absolutely horrible! At the end of it all, I was feeling unwell and by the time I got home, my stomach was so uncomfortable I vomited everything out.

9tro: Have you ever considered leaving your current day job and focus solely on pursuing your dance and modeling career? Yes/No?Why?

Ophelia: Yes! Mainly because I get to live everyday differently. Take acting for example, you have the opportunity to take on different roles and experience the life of others. It is definitely more interesting than a regular 9-5 office job.

9tro: What an ideal weekend for you is like?

Ophelia: Easy! Being out in the sun, laying on a daybed and sipping coconut juice!

9tro: What will an ideal life-partner be like?

Ophelia: Someone who genuinely cares about my wellbeing, has a good sense of responsibility, is driven and knows how to have fun. I’m quite an adventurer and he needs to be as spontaneous as I am!

9tro: Words of advice to any aspiring dancers or models?

Ophelia: Start as early as you can. It takes constant effort and practice to train your core. Having a good core is important in dancing because it helps you execute the moves well without getting hurt. As for modeling, persevere and you will see the results. Many of my friends gave up going for commercial casting after failing a few times. Hard work pays off. It’s all about casting experiences and how to improve yourself for the next one. I went through over a hundred castings before I landed my first commercial. Never give up!
