The BILSTEIN teams experienced a difficult weekend at the double header of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Finland. Engine issues caused problems for Anton Marklund in the Renault Mégane R.S. RX at the third round of the season on Saturday. Although the GCK BILSTEIN team pilot fought his way into the semi-finals, the Swede had to park his Mégane with engine problems in lap two.
Anton Marklund: “We made it through to the semi-finals despite struggling with engine issues all day. There was no time to change the engine in between races, so we just tried to survive but unfortunately by Q3 the engine had enough and we limped across the finish line but with a semi-final spot. The semi-final was just about getting over the line to collect some points.”
Andreas Bakkerud from Team Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel did somewhat better. He was also able to qualify for the semi-final races. In his Renault Mégane, also equipped with BILSTEIN shocks, the Norwegian crossed the finish line in P4, only to narrowly miss out on qualifying for the final.
„Not the best of days, but we’re getting closer to the top every time we go racing“, he was optimistic for the next day.
The fourth round of the FIA Rallycross World Championship started dry, but it shouldn’t be long before it rained and the conditions on the track became extremely difficult. In the morning warm-up Anton Marklund was able to set the fastest time, but later in the day the 27-year-old struggled with grip problems.
Nevertheless, Anton Marklund managed to qualify for the semi-finals on the technical track of the Tykkimäki Circuit in Kouvola, Finland. And Andreas Bakkerud had also made it to the semi-finals.
The semi-final saw plenty of race action with a lot of contact through corner one, however, the weather conditions didn’t just result in slippery surfaces but also a lot of mud; Thick enough to break the Mégane’s windscreen wipers following a jump with Marklund racing the remaining laps blindly with help of his spotter to finish in 6th and 11th overall.
Andreas Bakkerud in the Renault Mégane of Team Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel continued his good development. The 28-year-old made it to the final and finished the fourth round of the season in P6.
From 19 to 20 September, the BILSTEIN teams will have the chance to drive to the top again at the next double header in Riga, Latvia.
