Singapore - First launched in June 2019, the new compact luxury SUV from Mercedes-Benz has officially arrived into Singapore. This highly anticipated 7-seater shares a base platform with the A Class, B Class, CLA Class and GLA Class, and slips comfortably between the GLA and the bigger GLC sibling.
This entry-level GLB200 Progressive produces 163 horsepower with 250Nm of torque, hits 100km/h from a standstill in 9.1 seconds, with a top speed of 207km/h. All these crunched out from its 1.3 litre turbocharged inline four engine, mated to a seven speed dual clutch transmission.
In an effort to further reduce emissions and improve fuel economy, the GLB200’s four cylinder ending features a ‘cylinder shut off function’, ideal for urban driving in high build up areas such as Singapore. Two other engine options are also available on request, such as the GLB220 Diesel, and the significantly more powerful GLB35 AMG, which shares the same engine as the A45 AMG…
Built either in Mexico or China, the build quality is exceptional, with high-grade materials used in all your high-touch areas. Legroom and headroom for the front pair are more than sufficient, regardless of your height; while second row seats are equally well balanced... The third row however, will probably be best for younger children or short distances.
Three things we like:
- Highly practical in terms of interior space, performance, road presences and frugality.
- Solid build quality.
- Reasonably priced.
Two things we dislike:
- The GLB will be a best seller in its class and category, meaning it may become relatively common on the roads.
- No air-conditioning vents for the third row (unless specially requested, which will cost more).
