Anton Marklund and Guerlain Chicherit finish their 2019 rallycross season with a quite disappointing result. At the last event in South Africa the GCK drivers fail to reach the final race.
“Not the easiest weekend,” admits Anton Marklund. “We were struggling with the starts and traffic and missed out on a really clean race to properly show our pace here.”
In addition, Anton had problems with the powertrain: “Dropping from a 2nd row spot in the semi-final to the 3rd row after the engine blew up in Q4 made it difficult,” explains the driver of the Renault Mégane RS with BILSTEIN dampers. The mechanics tried everything to fix the car. But unfortunately, we had a problem with the throttle of the engine and our risk with the joker didn’t pay off,” says Anton. A fourth place in the semi-final was the maximum for the Swede as well as his team mate and team boss Guerlain Chicherit.
In a thrilling final race the Swede Timmy Hansen in a Peugeot 208 won the championship ahead of the Norwegian Andreas Bakkerud. And it was close, very close: While Hansen drove to fourth place, the Audi driver grabbed second place. Because both drivers now had 211 championship points, the most victories decided! And because Andreas Bakkerud was victorious only once, Timmy Hansen was crowned World Champion who won four times.
Anton Marklund has to settle for seventh place in the championship – at least ahead of rallycross stars like Liam Doran in the Audi S1 or former DTM champion Timo Scheider. Guerlain Chicherit finished 12th.
But Anton and Guerlain don’t want to bury their heads in the sand. On the contrary! “We had a great season and I’m proud of what the team achieved,” Anton looks back. And Guerlain adds: “We definitely never gave up and the considerable development can be seen in our increasingly competitive pace and the results we managed to push for. Our preparations for next season start tomorrow and I’m excited to share our plans soon.”
