Singapore - As a social media junkie during my commute to and fro work while trying as much to ignore the waft of the Singaporean Essence on the train, my social media newsfeed would be plastered with photos of friends overseas, food, aircraft and cars. In recent months, my wall has also multiple photos of D's customised green Toyota 86 in states of work in progress (WIP) as D took his car out of the paint shop to get his wheels fitted.
With the usual tirade of online automotive evangelists insinuating D's project in bad light amongst reasons including social justice, I was glad to be able to snagged some time out of D's busy schedule to take a look at his finished product.
Formerly an owner of a Mitsubishi Lancer CS3, D met with an unfortunate accident which resulted in the Lancer being scrapped before his project was completed. With some deliberation between the Toyota 86 and the Honda S2000 as the Lancer's replacement, the Toyota 86 was his choice car as there is a higher availability of tuner parts out in the market. That said, D dreams of owning the Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R given its mind blowing specifications. However, that would most likely remain out of reach to most in Singapore.
D's aim was to make his ride as unique and outstanding as possible, while retaining the JDM outlook of the project. His objective is to have people admire his ride and - for a brief moment - picture themselves in Japan.
Not much was done under the hood with an untouched engine coupled with a HKS Short Ram Air Intake, Grams Performance Throttle Body, Tomei Expreme Over Pipe that increases airflow over the stock unit which was narrow and had fattened sections that restricted any gains from aftermarket parts.
Thrown into the mix are JDL Auto Design UnEqual length headers that brings out the distinctive boxer burble of the flat-four engine with the aid of a GReddy Supreme SP Catback Exhaust System.
There are a multitude of bodykits out in the market with the Varis kit being one of D's shortlisted designs, but the TRA Kyoto Rocket Bunny aero kit version 3 was ultimately the winner.
Kei Miura's designs have taken the car scene by storm when the world set sights on the initial version of the Rocket Bunny kit for the Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ or the Scion FR-S (Okay, they're all the same) was crafted with the aid of computer 3D renderings. Now into its third iteration, the design has gotten wider and wilder!
D went even further with a Battle Aero V1 Chassis Mounted GT Wing which required some modifications (read: cutting) into the rear bumper.
Overfender rivets have been filled and sanded for a seamless flow through the front through rear.
A childhood dream fulfilled with the Lamborghini styled scissor doors that some may secretly crave that their cars have.
The 86 sits low with the Air Lift Performance 3H Air Management kit that straddles the balance between that lowered look and handling performance without the stress of a traditional coilover suspension or lowering springs.
Bumps, humps and steep slopes are cleared with a push of a button via remote.
While taking the 86 to gymkhana events was his initial plan, he has since changed his mind as he prefers to keep the Rocket Bunny kit in one piece.
"Not at all", was D's answer when asked if he has any regrets after going through all the hassle and unwanted fame over the car. he said "Do not listen to others telling you what you can, or cannot do with your ride. There will always be haters telling you that your ride is slow or that your ride looks bad. It is your ride, it is your world. Do what you like and enjoy each and every state of the process."
Like it or not, online haters have neither the right nor say. Enjoy the work and ideals of others, or put the money where your mouth is and do something better. Not into cars? Then pick a hobby and mind your own business. An automobile may simply be a means of getting from point A to B to some, but it means a lot more to the rest of us.
